About the archive

Viennese DIY-cultural institution Trash Rock Archives was started by Al Bird Sputnik in 2007. From the very beginning, the main focus of the work was on securing lost and forgotten Pop and Underground recordings from Austria’s past, as well as on developing new ways of making the music accessible to the public again. The archives found an interested audience through a series of articles, radio shows, video streaming channels, disk jockey-appearances and lectures on the topic.

At the moment a bilingual standard reference book about the Austrian Beat band movement of the late 1950s, 1960s and early 1970s is in the making. “SCHNITZELBEAT – A comprehensive guide to Austrian Rock-N-Roll, Beat, Folk, Pop and Incredibly Strange Music (1956 — 1976)” will be available at Redelsteiner Dahimène Edition (rde). So far, we have met and interviewed around 100 people that have played in Austrian bands in the relevant period.
