20 THE SEALS- Around the World (1969)
To conclude this compilation—and, in a way, to ring in volume 3—we bring you an example of Schnitzelbeat-turned-Proto-Punk. Rising from the ashes of the dance combo The Fairs in 1969, the short-lived Seals from Vienna had a propensity for hard Beat, repetitive song structures, and reduced lyrics.
“Perhaps we were ahead of our times,” remembers bassist Peter Renner. “But we wanted to play our own music, wild and aggressive. Back then, most people did not get that.” Among those was the controversial Ö3 dandy André Heller, who at one time started playing the Seals’ single in his radio show, but took it off halfway through to rant about its lack of originality. Just goes to show how wrong you can be! After a crossing into the professional field, playing a number of night clubs in Germany and (of course) changing their line-up a couple of times, the Seals finally gave up their exceptional career in the summer of 1970.
Zum Schluss dieser Zusammenstellung – und gewissermaßen als Vorbote zu Volume 3 – wird der Schnitzelbeat zum Proto-Punk. Die kurzlebigen Seals aus Wien entstanden im Frühling 1969 aus der Asche der Tanzband The Fairs und hatten offenkundig ein Faible für harten Beat mit repetitiven Songstrukturen und simplen Texten.
„Vielleicht waren wir unserer Zeit ein bisschen voraus”, vermutet Bassist Peter Renner. „Aber wir wollten unsere eigene Musik machen, wild und aggressiv. Viele Menschen haben das damals nicht ganz verstanden.” Einer davon war der umstrittene Ö3-Dandy André Heller, der die schroffe Seals-Eigenproduktion in seiner Radiosendung zwar anspielte, aber mittendrin abbrach und der Band jegliche Originalität absprach. Wie man sich doch täuschen kann. Nach einigen Besetzungswechseln, einem Übertritt ins Profilager und denkwürdigen Engagements in deutschen Nachtclubs, hängten die Seals im Sommer 1970 ihre ungewöhnliche Karriere an den Nagel.
